The author of Lucky Jim might have been the most unlikely choice for a host of any pop series unless it was a spoof, but talking to The Stage he explained "I find myself becoming increasingly interested in 'pop' music - particularly since my two teenage sons started collecting records."

Admitting to TV Times ahead of the first show that "The pop music business is still pretty much a closed book to me. But I am exposed to pop music around the house all the time. My teenage sons bring home records. Some of their records interest me and I have to ask 'Who's that?' Frankly, though, I don't care much for Sinatra and some other pop singers. According to reviews at the time Amis gave no extra insight into the workings of the pop business or the minds of its players. While one review questioned the involvement of ex-Melody Maker editor Pat Brand who received a credit.
